OUR ROOTS
We are a wholesale nursery on Long Island’s picturesque North Fork, founded in 1987 by Kathryn Pufahl. Growing a diverse and ever-evolving selection of plants. We pride ourselves on the quality of our material, the care, expertise, and dedication of our team, and the trust of our customers.
When Kathy began, an emphasis was placed on prospecting, propagating, and rigorously trialing interesting varieties. During that time, horticulturalists had an appetite for excitement and variety in their annual selections. This interest allowed a collaborative relationship to begin, where customers would prospect for new varieties and Kathy would trial, propagate, and cultivate them. As our business and plant list grew, so did the respect and demand for interesting annuals throughout the industry.
Kathy was a transformative figure in American horticulture. She elevated annuals from simple garden fillers to essential, stylish elements in outdoor spaces. Knowing instinctively combination gardening was an accessible and artistic way to use annuals. She created high-quality, artistic plant combinations and innovative hanging garden collections. Her vision set new standards in garden design and inspired a generation of gardeners. Although she is no longer with us she leaves a lasting legacy.
Many familiar faces from that period remain vital to our organization’s success. Each team member contributed significantly, using their unique skills to drive our growth and evolution.
Since then we have doubled our indoor and outdoor growing capacity at our Laurel location. Acquiring a second greenhouse property in Mattituck has allowed us to meet the growing demand for our products.
Affectionately known as Wickham, we have transformed the charming old glass greenhouses into facilities with efficient heating and energy systems. These greenhouses have been designed to allow optimal control of cooling, enabling us to acclimatize our plants to colder temperatures without compromising the aesthetic quality of our materials. We can produce a diverse range of hard-to-grow plants at scale, effectively meeting the needs of various climates and clientele.
We look forward to the challenges ahead and embrace the prospect of change as we adapt to a shifting climate and advancing technology. All the while, we remain grounded and committed to delivering outstanding products, exceptional customer service, and a dependable team you can trust.
